Siemens Limited announced today that it will create an additional 60 jobs in its IT Solutions & Services division in Cork City. The company’s expansion is due to its growing business and recent contract wins. The new positions are for highly skilled technical and network specialists.
Siemens attributes the success of its Irish operations to its competitive cost offering and its ability to hire people of the appropriate skills sets. The company recently secured a multi-million euro deal in the face of stiff international competition, to provide IT help desk services to a major multinational in nine languages in 34 countries. According to Siemens Ireland, CEO, Dr. Werner Kruckow: “Our Cork office’s ability to deliver a competitive efficient service, combined with a highly qualified workforce were key factors in securing the contract. It also illustrates Siemens’ commitment to Ireland and the importance of our Irish operations and local skills sets within Siemens globally.”

Ireland can lead the world in the Renewable Energy sector in the areas of Wind and Wave but only if the number of engineering graduates increases and universities and industry collaborate to build the engineering resource pool, according to Dr. Werner Kruckow, CEO, Siemens Ltd Ireland who was speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Siemens Young Innovative Engineer of the Year Awards in Dublin. The awards, which are held in association with Engineers Ireland, each year, are designed to recognise and encourage emerging engineering talent.
“We can create a new industry with significant employment and become a net exporter of renewable energy. However if we are to deliver this vision, we need industry and universities collaborating to produce more inspiring engineering degree courses and marketing engineering as a career to secondary students. A continuation of the dramatic shortage in engineering graduates will negatively impact on economic investment into Ireland” said Dr. Kruckow.
While industry voices concerns over the shortage of engineering graduates, the shortlist for this year’s Siemens Innovative Young Engineer of the Year Award, presented annually in association with Engineers Ireland, demonstrates that there is certainly no shortage of talent among Ireland’s young engineers.
From a pioneering device that warns of driver fatigue to a unique solution to reliably harness power from ocean waves - this year’s range of short-listed projects underlines how Ireland’s young graduates are leading the way for indigenous R&D. R&D is an area which the government has identified as vital for Ireland to remain competitive in the global economy. read more

According to Siemens, the world’s leading engineering company, the government focus on wind as the priority focus is the right way forward for Ireland to meet its renewable energy targets and ensure security of supply. However, consideration must be given to increasing the level of incentives for renewable energy developers.
Speaking at the annual Engineers Ireland Conference, Dr. Rene Umlauft said that Ireland can reasonably reach our renewable energy targets if we make the necessary infrastructure investments in the short term. "We need to ensure that developers are well-positioned to avail of the technology in a global market and build the required infrastructure to achieve our renewables targets." read more
Siemens Industry Automation Division this week unveiled the latest technologies and advances in manufacturing processes for Irish industry. The new technologies are designed to improve productivity and competitiveness using integrated diagnostics and simple connectivity via ProfiNet.
The range includes Simatic automation components which support high-speed IRT (Isochronous RealTime) Profinet communication. IRT is especially useful for large machines and equipment with a large number of nodes requiring very short updating times. Products with IRT capability ensure the transfer of high-speed automation data is managed successfully in conjunction with the increasingly high volumes of standard Ethernet data on production and office networks which are less time-critical. read more

Ireland is geographically well positioned to achieve 50% of its energy requirements from renewable resources by 2030 and could potentially become a net global exporter of renewable energy creating a new domestic industry with significant employment according to Dr. Werner Kruckow, CEO of Siemens Ireland.
Speaking at the Annual All Island Infrastructure Investment Conference today (Wednesday, 6th February) Dr. Kruckow said “The fact that Ireland has one of the greatest wind energy resources in Europe coupled with the highest average wave power means that Ireland’s renewable energy targets are not only achievable but could be exceeded. However, Ireland needs to act fast and needs to factor world demand into planning or incur higher costs and prolonged delivery times in infrastructural developments.“ read more
