Corporate responsibility is one of the levers of the Siemens company programme
Fit4 2010, with which Siemens is aiming to achieve sustained company development. The new program sets medium-term goals. In terms of corporate responsibility, the aim is to be an industry leader in the areas of corporate governance, compliance, climate protection and corporate citizenship. This defines important management emphases for Siemens corporate responsibility.

Good Corporate Governance forms the basis of our decision-making processes and is a main pillar of our company program Fit4 2010. It stands for effective management and control of our company, respect for shareholder's rights and comprehensive transparency to the capital market. Our actions are aligned with clear defined ethical principles. Responsible Corporate Governance supports our longterm value creation and strengthens the trust of shareholders, customers, employees, business partners, politics and the public in our company.

Compliance

Siemens aims to serve as a model for other companies with respect to transparency and proper, ethical practices worldwide. The Siemens Compliance Programm serves as the basis for responsible practices within the company.

No tolerance for non-compliant behavior

We conduct our business responsibly and in compliance with the laws and regulations of
all the countries where we do business.
The company does not tolerate illegal and unethical behaviour.
Siemens has established a “Tell Us” Helpdesk which is readily accessible on our Intranet
and Internet pages.
We have established binding company guidelines that require all our managers and employees worldwide to behave ethically and in conformity with the law.
These guidelines are the basis of our work and the relationships of our employees with one another as well as with our customers and partners.

Climate Protection

As a global company, Siemens stands by its responsibility to help limit the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the earth's atmosphere. Fit4 2010 defines climate change as one of the areas of focus for Siemens corporate responsibility for the years ahead.

Global warming is a reality. Its negative effects on the environment are a fact. It is still within our grasp to limit the magnitude of this development, maintain global bio-capacity and avert the risks to future generations. This requires great efforts by politicians, industry and consumers. Innovation is the critical tool for effectively counteracting climate change. As a global enterprise, Siemens accepts its responsibility to do its part in limiting the rise in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.

Siemens takes the subject of climate protection very seriously, including the environmental impact of our products and operations. We are demonstrating this commitment through a variety of measures, such as a constant increase in energy efficiency and the reduction in CO₂ emissions in our production operations. Corporate Citizenship

As a responsible citizen and neighbor, Siemens is committed to improving living and environmental conditions in all of the societies and at all of the sites in which Siemens does business. Corporate citizenship is the fourth area of focus of corporate responsibility under Siemens’ new Fit4 2010 program.

Social responsibility at Siemens has many different facets. It comprises not only the company’s programs to support science and education (known as Generation21), but also our commitment to social projects (Caring Hands):

Generation21

Contributions to learning and research and co-operations with schools and universities enhance our attractiveness as an employer of choice. By equipping young people with crucial knowledge and skills, we pave the way to a better future. To this end, we operate a number of advancement programs and engage in partnerships with schools and universities, under the heading Generation 21. In Ireland we support:

Siemens Discovery Box: As part of Ireland’s national ‘Engineering Week of Wonder,’ Siemens Ireland invited children to a fun-filled event to discover the wonders of science using the Siemens Discovery box. The purpose of the Siemens Discovery Box is to stimulate children‘s interest in science and technology in a fun way. We decided to extend the initiative and our engineers will visit a select number of schools with the Discovery Box to encourage children to embark on exciting careers in science and technology. more

Siemens Young Innovative Engineer: We promote the advancement of education and science through the Siemens Young Innovative Engineer of the Year Award in association with Engineers Ireland. This is an annual award open to all IEI accredited degree courses and is aimed at encouraging innovation and excellence in final year undergraduate engineering students.

Siemens UCD Robo Rugby Competition: Design and problem-solving are an important part of an Engineering education and there is no substitute for learning by doing. Robo Rugby is a game where small autonomous robots try to score points by moving balls into the scoring areas at each end of the playing table. The Robo Rugby design exercise provides an interesting and enjoyable problem, with plenty of scope for innovation and creative thinking . more

Siemens Caring Hands

Siemens operates a large number of projects to improve infrastructure, social welfare and education and to deliver disaster relief, not just in emerging and developing countries but also in western industrialized countries – frequently with the direct, personal engagement of Siemens people on site. In Ireland we initiated the:

Staff Charity Fund: The Staff Charity Fund aims to raise money for the relief of poverty and other works of a charitable nature beneficial to local communities both at home and abroad. The staff of Siemens put aside monthly contributions to the Fund. Every quarter charities are nominated by the staff. These are assessed by a committee and funding is awarded to nominations best meeting Fund's aim and guidelines. Siemens has generously supported the initiative by adding a contribution for every signed-up staff member.
